Light golden in colour which begins to hint at its style and character, the nose even more so, this is really intriguing “and I Love It”, a wine made in a slightly oxidized manner, they keep it in barrel and on its lees for 8 months, then two years bottle aging before release. Certainly you know something is going on here... Its like an aged Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc... and a great one at that... the aroma's and flavours are broad, oily, almost candle wax in taste, but with ripe fruit, peach, pear, touches of lychee and citrus oils, loaded with mineral. This is a dry, full bodied wine loaded with character, it seems to be on a rapid evolution, but the producers assure me it will drink very well for another five or more years and certainly through 2012. I think this is a brilliant effort from a very talented and it seems as yet reasonably unknown but very long standing producer, but for me it shows what impeccable winemaking and old vines can produce in different regions throughout Spain. One of my best finds over the period 2007 and into early 2008.
Because of its style and levels of mellow citric fruit this is a superlative wine to drink on its own. But will perfectly support any dish of aioli, avocado with prawns, boudin, Caesar salad, ceviche, guacamole, houmous, mayonnaise based dishes, Thai salads and Thai style dishes with coconut milk or lemon grass, smoked salmon or smoked trout, Sea bass, Sea bream, monkfish, grilled scallops and most shellfish.
The vineyard dates from the 17th Century and is located at Can Battle near Cantallops, the most northerly village in the Interior of Catalonia, sheltered by the Albera Mountains, the land rises and gently falls in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Vines are between 10 and 70 years old with an average age of thirty years. With some 95% of the production given over to the traditional grape styles of the region, and small amount of more modern styles, Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot have been introduced to in the last 15 years. The earth around this region is made up of granite and shale, very suitable for the production of quality grapes. Production is small, only 3,000 cases per year across seven different wines, all are unique and flavoursome. This producer is new to me, and they are extremely talented, it seems the are either by design or accident, (I don’t know which) taking on some of the best known styles of wine from different regions of France and Spain, Their sweet wines are in my opinion made in the style of but a higher quality than Mas Amiel, their top red would shame most Priorat cellars, and this white would easily compete with the best of Chateauneuf Blanc, when I visited the cellar and tasted the new wines coming through I simply though, this is a producer we must have in the portfolio.
