90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot
Similarly deep colour, for the moment somewhat closed aromatically, but the palette is easy drinking, juicy and fresh through the acidity and sweet tannic framework, this is for me the best wine they have yet made under this label, nice finish, this is a lovely wine. Should develop well by 2008.
Wine Spectator
An easygoing Chianti, with black cherry and flowers. Fresh medium palate and a crisp finish. Drink now. 2,000 cases made.
We would suggest matching this with the finest Italian foods, herb stuffed veal wrapped in Prosciutto, venison braised in cherries, saltimbocca alla romana, most Italian sausages, or pork sausages with lots of herbs, and of course many styles of pasta or pizza.
Run by the dynamic & enthusiastic Filippo Rocchi & his sister Stefania, Castelvecchio is situated in San Casciano Val di Pesa, in the area that produces Chianti Colli Fiorentini, among the most dynamic denominations of Chianti. 32 hectares of the estate is cultivated with grapes. The condition of the soil is Pliocene in origin. It is characterized mainly by a kind of pebbly limestone rich in marl, and by sandstone, which offer a good agronomic fertility and basic freshness.
Wine obtained from Sangiovese 90% and Merlot 10% grapes, fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel vat during 14 days with a slow maceration, daily pumping over and pressings which allow a major extraction of tannins, phenolics and anthocyanins. The wine is aged for minimum 12 months in French barriques and is then further refined in bottle before being put on the market.
