PV Tasting Note:

The inky/ruby/purple-tinged, opulent, blockbuster 2003 Old Vine Blewitt Springs Shiraz offers up sweet scents of smoked herbs, blackberries, and meaty, earthy undertones all wrapped up in dark chocolate. Filled with flavour intensity as well as substance, this rich, full-throttle Shiraz will drink well for 7-8 years. This is a fruit bomb, yes, but there is so much more to this wine which only time will enable it to develop.
Independently reviewed by Price as the "World's Best" Syrah produced in 2003.

Independent Review:

93 points – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
The 2003 Shiraz Old Vine is a big, full-bodied effort exhibiting notes of melted chocolate, chewy blackberry and cassis fruit, and toasty oak. With plenty of glycerine, alcohol, and rich fruit in its deep, formidably endowed, velvety textured personality.
Steven Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
Dense purple. Rich and deep, with dark berry aromas conveying a strong sense of sweetness. The blackberry and cassis notes are accented by darker liquorice and roasted coffee tones, but this is all about fruit. Lush, round and generous, with an absence of rough edges; the fruit really stains the palate. Finishes on a subtle note of roasted herbs, the sweet berry fruit flavours lingering impressively.
The Wine Spectator
Ripe and rich, a punchy wine with great extract of raspberry, plum and peppermint that pushes through the long, generous finish. Needs time to gain some polish.

Food recommendation:

A world class Shiraz and best matched to a well charred barbeque steak, roast fillet of beef, a hearty steak and vegetable pie, veal chops, lamb tagine, roast lamb, perfect with pink duck and almost any meat dish with a rich reduction sauce. Will also suit Aged cheddar, parmesan or Gruyère cheese.

Ideal Drinking:
From now through 2015
Producer and winemaking:

Located at an altitude of 300 feet, Blewitt Springs is a vineyard of approximately 25 acres that is cooler and has a longer ripening period than the nearby vineyards at Willunga and McLaren Vale. The low yielding vines at 'The Springs' are over 60 years old and at best they produce 2 tonnes of fruit per acre (35 hl/ha). The unique terroir of this vineyard allows to create an elegant single vineyard Shiraz that possesses a profound depth of flavour.

The wines are matured in French oak hogsheads and American oak barriques for 15 months with a policy of minimal handling. We believe Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz is a wine of uncompromised quality and rare excellence.
