PV Tasting Note:

The spectacular 2005 Cape Barren GSM, a blend of 50% Grenache with about 40% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre, is aged in 50% new oak barrels. Its huge black-cherry and black-raspberry-scented, exotic nose with hints of coffee, hickory, and cedar is marvellous. A wine of exceptional definition, layers of concentrated fruit, and a lusty, wonderfully rich, mouthfilling finish, it is one of the most extraordinary wine bargains in the market. There are only a few hundred cases available for the market, so move quickly if you want to secure any of this blockbuster value wine.
Independently rated by Price as one of the "World's Top 30" red wines made in 2005.

Independent Review:

91 points – Robert Parker Wine Advocate
A superb blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Shiraz, and 10% Mourvèdre, the 2005 GSM reveals a deep ruby/purple hue along with scents of pepper, charcoal, roasted herbs, meat, blackberries, and cherries.

Food recommendation:

This bargain priced Australian red made in the manner of a top flight Châteauneuf will suit all manner of hearty foods, try matching it to herbed meat rissoles, lasagne, saddle of hare, a rich steak and kidney pie, braised beef with olives, lyonnaise sausages, crisp skinned pork with prune stuffing and is a real crowd pleaser with an Irish stew.

Ideal Drinking:
From now through 2012
Producer and winemaking:

The vineyard holdings of Cape Barren owners Brian Ledgard and Peter Matthews, extends to some 150 acres in McLaren Vale. Their vineyard at Blewitt Springs was the source for several icon McLaren Vale wines during the 1990’s. In 1999 Peter and Brian created Cape Barren Wines to selectively use their vineyard resources and create their own icon wine – the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz. Brian Light was given the role of winemaker to craft the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz. From vintage 2003 Brian’s role has expanded to include the Wild Goose Shiraz and the GSM (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre), all made from McLaren Vale grown grapes. Cape Barren wines will always be a McLaren Vale focused producer aiming at super-premium and icon class wines. Whilst Brian and Peter have the capability to make over 50,000 cases of wine from their vineyard holdings, their focus will be on creating only the best wines that showcase the varieties and vineyard sites capable of expressing the unique flavours and textures of McLaren Vale.

Sourced entirely from their own Vineyards in McLaren Vale, and from vines which average 40-70 years of age, it is no surprise this is a monumental wine.
