The steely Albariño from Pazo de Señorans this year exhibits a straw/green colour as well as superb linear purity, so tight for the present but loads of texture, with coxing it reveals a massive slate/mineral aspect, Napoli Lemon, pear, apricot and a spicy, honeyed, rich, super elegant bone dry style. My knowledge and history of these wines suggests that it will develop beautifully over the next six months and drink well through 2010. Having produced five of the Worlds six top rated Albariño wines over the period 2000-2005 inclusive, this new vintage is a further testament to the artisan efforts of this wonderful estate. If you want to drink this gorgeous style of wine, why look anywhere else. Very pale bright green to yellow. With intense aromas of sweet lemongrass, gooseberry, guava, grapefruit and of course lifted passion fruit, along with this wines distinctively smoky mineral (from barrel fermentation), herbaceous, almost asparagus-like aspects. Forward, fruity and herbal, with juicy but fleshy tropical and berry fruit flavours countered by cashew nut. Finishes with refreshing citrusy acidity and excellent persistence.

From a vineyard planted on granite, a long established winery with vines ranging from 15 to 80 years of age, this 2006 is fashioned from Spain’s indigenous Godello grape. A light straw colour with a greenish hue is followed by jumping aromatics of ripe peach, white currant and honeyed citrus, the wine has a deep body, concentrated persistence, and undeniable minerality combined with notes of lemon/lime, melon and honey, crisp acidity, and fine depth, ending with bitter citrus notes. This distinctive, singularly dry, but fruit driven white can be enjoyed over the next decade.

The 2006 Ribolla Gialla is a notch above the usual shrilly acidic wines of this variety, lightly golden in colour, floral, honeyed, wafting, and subtle, but expressive and elegant as well, ample and long on the palate with light tropical notes to balance the citric fruit and a long, vibrant finish. It will easily last another two or three years.

Cut from the same mould as the 2004, the full-bodied, rich 2005 Le Bas Chardonnay possesses a beautiful texture with the precision of a great Grand Cru Burgundy, aromas of honeysuckle, lemon blossom, grapefruit marmalade, and toasty, yeasty, spicy hazel nuts. Medium to full-bodied with good underlying acidity, it was aged in 100% High Grade New French oak. One of West Australia’s most brilliant new wineries, Woodside Valley Estate is fashioning hand-crafted, singular wines that are not only gorgeous to smell and taste, but innovative in their stylistic orientations. They manage to combine the elegance and complexity of Europe, with the sensationally ripe fruit of Australia, only 400 cases made.

Medium straw colour. Rich, smoky aromas of peach, mirabelle and apricot. Fat and dense on the palate; in fact, almost thick, with creamy, exotic flavors of lichee, guava and mango, accented by refreshing mint. Really dramatic on the palate, but this finishes clean and brisk.

The 2007 Cover Drive is again outstanding. This represents a knock-out value, possibly one of the finest bargains in Cabernet Sauvignon, certainly I cannot think of another for the same price which beats this super wine. Terrific minty, black currant aromas jump from the glass of this savoury, fleshy, medium to full-bodied, silky-textured, luscious Cabernet. Ripe and easy-going on the palate, it has excellent depth of flavour, good concentration, and a fruit-filled finish. Sept 2009.
 

From a mountainside, high elevation, old vine Grenache vineyard the 2004 Lasendal Garnacha was aged in French and American oak for nine months. It is a lovely, expressive, deep ruby-tinged wine offering sweet aromas of kirsch liqueur, liquorice, white pepper, graphite and dusty, loamy characteristics. Full-bodied, supple textured, flashy, and flavourful, it is an unreal value

The inky/ruby/purple-tinged, opulent, blockbuster 2003 Old Vine Blewitt Springs Shiraz offers up sweet scents of smoked herbs, blackberries, and meaty, earthy undertones all wrapped up in dark chocolate. Filled with flavour intensity as well as substance, this rich, full-throttle Shiraz will drink well for 7-8 years. This is a fruit bomb, yes, but there is so much more to this wine which only time will enable it to develop.

This wine has a pure fruit bouquet, offering a perfume of floral red and black berries, blueberries, and super minerality. Dense ruby/purple, medium-bodied, elegant, a layered mouthfeel, and a singular personality, all built on an understated structure of tannin, this is another fabulous Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend from the Duemani estate. This beautiful wine, can be enjoyed now or continue to be aged for several years and then drink beautifully for 10-15 years.

Deep ruby and already delicious, so easy to drink now but should continue to improve for several years. A lovely wine, filled with soft berry fruit, toasted wild cherry and long, with great acidity to balance the ripe fruit flavours. The soft tannins almost caress the juicy fruit on the finish. If you want to impress people with a wine from a great house, this is a very good choice.

Deep dark red, intensely perfumed bouquet of candied red and dark berries, incense, Asian Spices, potpourri and Burgundy forest floor. Silky in texture, loaded with super levels of fruit, sweet raspberry, cherry and candied rose petal flavours, clings to the palate with excellent juicy persistence, becomes even spicier with aeration whilst gaining even more sweetness and power, this is totally delicious and seductive now, but I’d bet on it improving further with another couple of years in bottle.
