The inky/ruby/purple-tinged, opulent, blockbuster 2003 Old Vine Blewitt Springs Shiraz offers up sweet scents of smoked herbs, blackberries, and meaty, earthy undertones all wrapped up in dark chocolate. Filled with flavour intensity as well as substance, this rich, full-throttle Shiraz will drink well for 7-8 years. This is a fruit bomb, yes, but there is so much more to this wine which only time will enable it to develop.

Oh Yes, this hits all the right spots, Heggies are doing something wonderful now, I was never a fan before 2008, suddenly this winery is making some of the best chardonnay you will find anywhere, but at these prices its nothing short of miraculous. This 2008 is totally brilliant, for the money it’s an outrageously good effort, complex and offering good steely minerality, toasted new oak, loaded with nectarine and quince fruit, nutty as you could wish for, honeyed too, full bodied and long, oh so long. I cannot wait for the reserve to be released. But in the interim if you want to know what really good burgundy tastes like, but can’t afford them...try the Heggies 2008, buy this up now before it’s all gone. Tasted January 2010.

This Yarra Valley winemaker has crafted a really interesting bistro style red wine – Chianti style, easy drinking yet with a real quality dimension to it and a really good food match of a wine. Lovely fresh and a vibrant purplish red, the wine exudes dark berry fruit characters, along with loads of rich succulent juicy plum. Mouth filling plum glides effortlessly down the throat, lingering on and on.

The 2003 Shiraz/Viognier offers an exotic, flamboyant nose of dark raspberry, blackberries, sassafras, black pepper, floral honey and flowers along with supersweet berry and cassis flavours, wonderful intensity, richness, fruit, and glycerine. The long, sweet finish betrays no rough edges, a real fruit bomb, but with spice notes adding intrigue and style.

The 2007 Cover Drive is again outstanding. This represents a knock-out value, possibly one of the finest bargains in Cabernet Sauvignon, certainly I cannot think of another for the same price which beats this super wine. Terrific minty, black currant aromas jump from the glass of this savoury, fleshy, medium to full-bodied, silky-textured, luscious Cabernet. Ripe and easy-going on the palate, it has excellent depth of flavour, good concentration, and a fruit-filled finish. Sept 2009.
 

A huge, dramatic nose of Smokey bacon fat, jammy blue and black fruits is followed by a dense, full-bodied, layered wine crammed with ripe fruit. Its deep texture has now developed beautifully, sumptuous thickness, lushness, and admirable purity combine to give this full-bodied, flamboyant Shiraz a compelling character. I suspect there is more tannin than the wine is currently revealing. This is a mouth filling, gorgeously proportioned, well-endowed wine which is now drinking wonderfully well. Quality new French oak certainly makes an impact on both the aromatics and palate, but melon and nectarine fruit dominate, with traces of lemon/lime/satsuma citrus following on closely, finishes with some spice and mineral notes, gorgeous stuff. This could easily be mistaken for a top flight Burgundy.

Opaque purple with lifted violets, raspberry and blueberries mingles with vanilla and chocolate completing the picture. Sweet fruits flows onto the palate balanced with cedary and biscuity French oak, which shows through as young, tight, yet fruit fully long finish. This has a superb future and should drink really well for 15-20 years.

I was really so impressed by the Watershed 2002 Cabernet Merlot Blend, I found it in a flight of about 180 different wines from 16 separate producers during an afternoon tasting session in Margaret River, it ranked in the top four wines along with their Shiraz. It represents a stonking value in a Bordeaux-styled red of considerable complexity and elegance. Its deep blue/purple colour is accompanied by sweet aromas of crème de cassis, lavender, and touches of spice box. Gorgeously textured, classy, and noble, with precise flavours, terrific definition, and a long, concentrated finish, this beauty is a steal in terms of pricing. It would be interesting to insert as a ringer in a blind tasting of top classified growth Bordeaux.

Pale green/yellow colour, musky, floral and quite incisive on the nose, with an array of fruit lemongrass, gooseberry, lychee and herb qualities: in the mouth pear, green papaya, mango, basil and curry leaf. A silky mid-weight palate showing precise, tangy fruit flavours lifted by bright acidity and dusty mineral notes. The interplay of fruit, mineral and herb tones is really enjoyable, nicely done.
