PV Tasting Notes

I first drank this in early 2010, we shared a bottle along with two other top Italian bottles at Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia) and the Vigna stood up. Fantastic wine, complex, fresh and lively, the palate is super ripe, red berry compote and cherry syrup with exotic nuances of oriental herb and complicated by sandalwood, finishes long and sweet, with sweet ultra silky tannins and a lovely violet note adding lift and interest. This is one of the best young Chianti’s I have tasted in a long time.

Independent Review

90 Points Antonio Galoni The Wine Advocate Oct 2010
The 2006 Chianti Colli Fiorentini Riserva Vigna La Quercia is Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in cement and aged in neutral French oak. It shows lovely drive and intensity, with layers of dark fruit wrapped around a clean mineral core of notable focus. The wine’s finesse and sense of balance are both first-rate. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018.

This is a lovely set of new releases from Castelvecchio. Consulting oenologist Luca D’Attoma has worked here since 2003. A 100% Sangiovese is also on the horizon, and should be a fascinating wine given the progress the estate has made in recent years.

We would suggest matching this with the finest Italian foods, herb stuffed veal wrapped in Prosciutto, venison braised in cherries, saltimbocca alla romana, most Italian sausages, or pork sausages with lots of herbs, and of course many styles of pasta or pizza.

Run by the dynamic & enthusiastic Filippo Rocchi & his sister Stefania, Castelvecchio is situated in San Casciano Val di Pesa, in the area that produces Chianti Colli Fiorentini, among the most dynamic denominations of Chianti. 32 hectares of the estate is cultivated with grapes. The condition of the soil is Pliocene in origin. It is characterized mainly by a kind of pebbly limestone rich in marl, and by sandstone, which offer a good agronomic fertility and basic freshness.
