PV Tasting Notes

The 04 Brecciolino is a gem of a wine, highly polished; Scents of smoky leather, game, earthy blackcurrant and dark cherries emerge as it sits in the glass, on the palate this is layered and multi-dimensional, the fruit goes the full distance here, gorgeous length, this elegant refined beauty needs to be savoured gently and slowly.

Independent Review

90 Points James Suckling The Wine Spectator
Extremely ripe aromas of raspberry and cherry follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Delicious already. Sangiovese, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best after 2008. 450 cases made. –JS

Serve this top Tuscan wine with antipasto, barbecues, beef stroganoff, wind-dried beef, stuffed cabbage, roast guinea fowl, pigeon, rabbit, risotto, shepherds pie, strong meats, game and strong flavoured pasta dishes.

Run by the dynamic & enthusiastic Filippo Rocchi & his sister Stefania, Castelvecchio is situated in San Casciano Val di Pesa, in the area that produces Chianti Colli Fiorentini, among the most dynamic denominations of Chianti. 32 hectares of the estate is cultivated with grapes. The condition of the soil is Pliocene in origin. It is characterized mainly by a kind of pebbly limestone rich in marl, and by sandstone, which offer a good agronomic fertility and basic freshness.

This particular wine is obtained from a selection of grapes Sangiovese 85%, Merlot 7%, Petit Verdot 8% selected entirely by hand and is the result of a very accurate vinification process. Cold maceration for 48 hours, fermentation at controlled temperature in stainless steel vat for 18 days with daily pumping over and gentle pressings which allow a high extraction, yet maintaining a sufficient soft basis. Ageing of 12 months in new French barriques and further refinement in bottle for minimum 12 months.
