PV Tasting Notes

This wine has a little tannin to resolve, but the tannins are sweet, its more well endowed than usual, aromas of cedar, black cherry and cassis, fleshy on the palate, finishing with some underbrush and forest floor earthy tones. Should be ready to drink by 2009 and last through 2015. Very good value. Tasted June 2008. Best to decant for a couple of hours before serving.

Independent Review

87 points Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate, Feb 2009
An attractive, more chunky effort than most wines of this vintage, Ampelia’s 2006 exhibits good flesh, medium body, sweet tannin, and an earthy, black currant fruitiness with a hint of dried herbs. Drink it over the next 2-5 years.

This lovely Merlot dominated blend is perfect for Fillet of Beef Marchand de Vin (with wine and bone marrow) Roast Fillet of Beef but avoiding Beef Wellington, pastry dulls the palate. Roast lamb and Venison. However this is quite simply a joy to drink without any food accompaniments.

The area of Côtes de Castillon is named after the town of Castillon-la-Bataille where the battle that brought an end to the Hundred Years War in 1453. The battle of Castillon, ended with the death of General Talbot, leader of the English troops, which brought an end to the domination of the English. General Talbot was the same who owned the property which was to become 3eme Growth Château Talbot in Saint Julien.

The AOC Côtes de Castillon is now one of the most fashionable of all the Bordeaux satellites with several prominent winemakers buying chateaux there. The family Perse of Chateau Pavie, Premier Cru Classé Saint milion has acquired 2 chateaux in the appellation: Les Clos Lunelles and Château Sainte Colombe. Count Stefan von Neipperg ofChâteau Canon La Gaffelière, Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion, owns Château d’Aiguilhe and Francois Despagne of Château Grand Corbin Despagne handles 5 hectares of Château Ampelia.
