PV Tasting Notes
The impressive barrel samples of the 2006 Bishop Shiraz exhibit an inky/purple colour, greater intensity, and additional roasted meat and gamy characteristics interwoven with pepper, crème de cassis, and blackberry liqueur. The oak treatment is identical to the 2005, but that component seems more subdued in the 2006, however as with all of the top Glaetzer trio, the acidity levels are substantial at this stage. This 2006 Bishop should evolve fairly rapidly and drink well for 20-25 years. Tasted June 2007 rating 92-94 Independently rated as one of the "Worlds top 10 Syrah wines" produced by Price in Oct 2007.
92-94 points Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 31st Oct 2007 The 2006 Bishop was sourced from 60-year-old vines and aged for 14 months in used French and American oak. Purple/black in color, it has an expressive nose of cedar, smoke, game, bacon, and blueberry. On the palate this medium to full-bodied wine is tightly wound but has all the right stuff. There are tons of ripe fruit and silky tannin, excellent balance and a long finish, but the wine will need 8-10 years to fully display its personality. It will easily last through 2036. Hats off to Ben Glaetzer for producing an extraordinary portfolio! The renowned winemaker, Ben Glaetzer, sources all of his fruit for this label from the Ebenezer district in the northern Barossa. Many knowledgeable experts cite this sub-region as the finest in the Valley.
For a winery only established in 1995, and dedicated to hand-crafted, artisanally made wines, Ben Glaetzer has consistently been a revelation on the World stage of wine production where the quality has always remained truly splendid. The value of their wines is something else, had these wines come from the Rhone of Bordeaux regions; it would have a zero added to its price tag.
