The 2003 Costers del Gravet is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Garnacha, and 15% Carinena. The Garnacha and Carinena vines range in age from 30-60 years while the Cabernet is 15-20 years. The wine was aged for 12 months in used French oak. Purple coloured and less influenced by the oak than the follow on vintage, the wine exhibits an beautiful perfume of pain grille, minerals, scorched earth, spice box, black currant, and black cherry. This is followed by a layered, full-bodied wine with gobs of sweet black fruits, a plush texture and a pure lengthy finish.
Classic Bordeaux red in style and best with roast lamb, rack of lamb, cheese soufflé, beefsteak, boiled beef, beef stews, oxtail, kidneys, roast pork alternatively venison
This must be one of Spain (and the world’s?) leading co-operative wineries, making commercially astute and sometimes quite exciting wines from the 15 main producers sharing some 250 hectares about 625 acres of largely old vine high mountain vineyards planted at an altitude of 400 to 700 metres. The winery is located in Tarragona, and the Montsant DO wine region where these wines come from is a close neighbour to the famous Priorat region. Maceration: 20-25 days Fermentation at 26-30° Ageing: 12 months in French and American barrels
