The vineyard holdings of Cape Barren owners Brian Ledgard and Peter Matthews, extends to some 150 acres in McLaren Vale. Their vineyard at Blewitt Springs was the source for several icon McLaren Vale wines during the 1990’s. In 1999 Peter and Brian created Cape Barren Wines to selectively use their vineyard resources and create their own icon wine – the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz. Brian Light was given the role of winemaker to craft the Cape Barren Old Vine Shiraz. From vintage 2003 Brian’s role has expanded to include the Wild Goose Shiraz and the GSM (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre), all made from McLaren Vale grown grapes. Cape Barren wines will always be a McLaren Vale focused producer aiming at super-premium and icon class wines. Whilst Brian and Peter have the capability to make over 50,000 cases of wine from their vineyard holdings, their focus will be on creating only the best wines that showcase the varieties and vineyard sites capable of expressing the unique flavours and textures of McLaren Vale.
